Guadalajara is the capital city of the central state of Jalisco in Mexico. It's also the second largest city in the country and considered a colonial city, although much of its architecture dates from the independence period. The city is famous for being the birthplace of the famous Mariachis, and it is the perfect place to find some of the best Mexican traditional handmade items. The town of Tequila is minutes away, and is a must visit when visiting Guadalajara, to taste and learn about the world famous Mexican drink Tequila. The historic city is a magical place full of traditional architecture and art, with trendy shops and restaurants. One of the best artistic treasures in Guadalajara are the José Clemente Orozco's impressive frescos, located in the Palacio de Gobierno, the Instituto de Cabanas and inside the Cathedral. The Cathedral, one of Guadalajara's main symbols, is a very imposing mixture of architectural styles, with the lower parts of it dating back to as early as 1571. There is a wide open plaza area in front of it, perfect to rest one’s feet. Guadalajara, called often the pearl of the west, it's a big and fascinating city with a beautiful and interesting contrast of the historic and the modern. It is the perfect destination for tourist that are looking to visit a festive and traditional Mexican city that has all the luxuries and size of a big city, without losing the traditional Mexican touch.
